About the Programme

Built around the real rhythms of retail.

Picture this: it's Tuesday morning. You open the shop, a staff member calls in sick, you notice the stockroom count doesn't match your system, and a customer from last week left a confusing review online. You haven't looked at last month's sales summary yet. And somewhere in the back of your mind, there's a question about what your payroll responsibilities actually are.

That's everyday retail. HelpOne was created specifically for moments like that. This is an informational online programme — not accounting advice, not a financial advisory service — designed to give independent Canadian shop owners a clearer picture of how the operational side of their business actually works.

The course covers five focused areas: inventory practices, staff scheduling frameworks, collecting and using customer feedback, reading basic POS reports, and understanding what CRA expects from you as a small employer. Each module is self-paced and written in plain language.

Course Modules

Five areas. One coherent course.

Each module stands on its own but connects to the others. Together they form a complete operational picture for a retail business with employees.

01

Inventory Management

Retail stock is money sitting on shelves. This module walks through how to track what you have, identify slow-moving items, and build simple counting routines that work even when you're the only one doing them. You'll learn how inventory records connect to your purchasing decisions and how to spot discrepancies before they become costly.

  • Setting up a basic stock tracking system
  • Cycle counting vs. full stock takes
  • Handling supplier discrepancies
  • Connecting inventory to reorder planning
02

Employee Scheduling

Scheduling feels straightforward until it isn't. This module covers how to build a schedule that reflects actual customer traffic patterns, how to handle shift changes without chaos, and how to document availability and time-off in a way that's fair and consistent. We'll also look at what provincial employment standards say about scheduling notice.

  • Matching staffing levels to traffic patterns
  • Documenting employee availability
  • Shift handover best practices
  • Scheduling compliance considerations
03

Customer Feedback

Customer feedback is data — and most small shops don't collect it systematically. This module looks at simple, low-cost methods for gathering feedback in-store and online, how to read patterns across responses, and how to turn what you hear into actual operational changes. No software required to get started.

  • In-store feedback collection methods
  • Responding to online reviews
  • Spotting patterns across feedback
  • Turning feedback into process changes
04

POS Reporting Basics

Your point-of-sale system generates reports that most business owners never fully read. This module explains what the common report types actually mean — daily sales summaries, product performance, hourly transaction breakdowns, voids and refunds — and how to use them to make small but meaningful decisions about your shop.

  • Understanding daily and weekly summaries
  • Reading product performance data
  • Interpreting refund and void reports
  • Connecting POS data to inventory
05

CRA Employer Basics

This module is informational only and does not constitute financial or tax advice. It provides a general overview of what the Canada Revenue Agency expects from small employers: payroll deductions, remittance schedules, T4 preparation, and record-keeping timelines. Designed to help owners understand the framework — not to replace a qualified accountant or advisor.

  • Overview of payroll deduction types
  • Remittance frequency categories
  • T4 and year-end basics
  • CRA record-keeping guidelines

Our Approach

How we think about this course.

Informational, Not Advisory

HelpOne is an educational programme. Nothing in this course constitutes accounting advice, legal counsel, or financial guidance. The CRA module in particular is designed to give owners a general orientation to employer obligations — it is not a substitute for a qualified accountant.

Canada-Specific Context

This course was written with Canadian retail in mind. References to employment standards, tax obligations, and operational norms reflect the Canadian context. Provincial differences are acknowledged where relevant, and learners are encouraged to verify specifics with local resources.

Self-Paced Learning

No live sessions. No deadlines. Each module is available on demand so you can work through the material during quiet periods in the shop, at home after hours, or in whatever order makes sense for your current challenges.

Practical Over Theoretical

Every topic in this course is grounded in day-to-day retail reality. We focus on what actually happens in a shop: the messy stockroom, the no-show employee, the POS report nobody reads. The goal is usable understanding, not academic completeness.

What's Included

Everything in the programme, explained.

The course is delivered entirely online. Here's what you actually get when you enrol.

Practical Checklists

Printable operational checklists for daily opening, stock counts, shift handover, and end-of-day procedures. Formatted to be pinned up or handed to staff.

Who This Is For

This course is a fit if you recognize yourself here.

You own or manage a retail shop

Boutique, hardware, gift shop, specialty food, apparel — if you have shelves, staff, and a POS terminal, this course was written with you in mind.

You have recently hired your first employees

The moment you become an employer, a new set of obligations begins. This course covers what that means from an operational and CRA perspective, in plain terms.

You're not sure your current systems are working

If inventory feels chaotic, scheduling is done on a group chat, and you haven't looked at your POS reports in months, this course helps you see what a more structured approach looks like.

You have limited time

Each module is designed to be completed in a single sitting of under an hour. You don't need to clear a full day — you need a few quiet hours across a couple of weeks.

Common Questions

Things people ask before enrolling.

No. HelpOne is a purely informational and educational programme. Nothing in this course constitutes financial advice, tax advice, accounting services, or legal counsel. The CRA module provides a general overview of publicly available employer obligations for orientation purposes only. You should always consult a qualified accountant or tax professional for advice specific to your situation.

The course covers content applicable to small retail businesses across Canada. Where employment standards vary by province, the course notes this and encourages learners to verify their specific provincial requirements. The CRA content applies federally and is relevant to all Canadian employers. The course is based in Quebec but the content is written for a national audience.

No. The course assumes you are already running or preparing to run a retail shop, so it skips the very basics of starting a business. It does not, however, assume any formal business education. Everything is explained in plain, direct language aimed at working owners, not business students.

The course is most relevant to independent retail shops that carry physical stock and have at least one or two employees. This includes clothing boutiques, specialty food shops, hardware stores, gift shops, bookstores, and similar businesses. Food service operations like restaurants have somewhat different operational structures and may find some modules less applicable.

Each of the five modules is designed to take between 45 minutes and 75 minutes to complete, including the associated reference materials. The full course can reasonably be completed across five to eight hours of study time. Because it's self-paced, there is no required completion timeline.

Currently the course is offered in English only. A French-language version is being developed. If you'd like to be notified when it becomes available, please send us a note through the contact form below.
